There’s been a lot of hypothesis around VW’s future plans for an upscale model. We’ve heard about a second generation Phaethon, a luxury crossover dubbed Sfero that’ll sit between the latter and the Passat in VW’s range and finally, about a luxury 4door-coupe, a subcategory that’s drawing a lot of attention lately. However, considering the way things are at VW’s headquarters, no one can predict the company’s next move. –Continued below If you ask us though, we’d place our bets on a mid-sized luxury 4door-coupe. A, cause we seriously doubt that VW will attempt to give the Phaethon a second chance, B, because there’s no point of having a crossover and an SUV in your range and C, cause a mid-sized luxury 4door-coupe will allow VW to enter a virgin subcategory –pricewise & sizewise, with no competition for the time being. As for Autozeitung’s rendering, well it’s just that; a hypothetical artisit impression. We completely agree though with the German magazine that if VW proceeds to this move, it will base the 4door-coupe on the Audi A6’s platform and mechanics.
